Lady Luck casino chips: Las Vegas, riverboats and the 50 cent chip

A collector wanted a near-mint or mint rack of Lady Luck 50 cent chips. The thread does not say which Lady Luck casino they came from, and there were several, run by the same company and later under other names. This article lays out the verified history of the Lady Luck properties, so a buyer can ask the right questions about a 50 cent chip.

The Las Vegas Lady Luck

The downtown Las Vegas property began as Honest John's in the early 1960s and became the Lady Luck under owner Andy Tompkins. A Las Vegas Advisor history says it became a full casino in 1968; further expansion in 1972, 112 hotel rooms in 1982, a 300 room east tower in 1986 and a 388 room west tower in 1989, for about 800 rooms. It closed in 2006 after being sold to Henry Brent Company, and the building reopened in 2013 as the Downtown Grand.1 Wikipedia says the original Las Vegas property was eventually sold in 2002, so sources differ on the date of the sale; the closing year of 2006 is consistent.2

Lady Luck Gaming and its riverboats

Tompkins founded Lady Luck Gaming in 1991 to expand beyond Las Vegas into states that were legalising riverboat gambling. Properties included:

Property Opened
Lady Luck Natchez, Mississippi February 1993
Lady Luck Rhythm & Blues, Lula, Mississippi (relocated from Mhoon Landing) June 1994
Lady Luck Bettendorf, Iowa (joint venture) April 1995
Miss Marquette Casino, Iowa (acquired) August 1999

The company went public in September 1993. Isle of Capri agreed to acquire it in October 1999 in a deal worth more than $400 million, completed in March 2000, and Isle of Capri rebranded most of the properties.2 Separately, the Missouri casino built by Aztar in Caruthersville was rebranded Lady Luck Casino Caruthersville on 10 June 2008 after Isle of Capri bought it in 2007.3 "Lady Luck" on a chip could therefore be from Las Vegas, the Mississippi or Iowa riverboats, or the 2008-onward Caruthersville casino.

What is known about the 50 cent chips

The wanted thread gives no maker, mould, era or design for the Lady Luck 50 cent chips. A commenter suggested "River City fracs" as an alternative, which the original poster declined because he already has a complete rack of such chips for a project in which chips are altered.4 The pages read give nothing else about the chip.

How to find out which Lady Luck you have

  • Read the text on the chip. Casino chips often name the city or state.
  • Look the chip up in the ChipGuide, which records each venue's address and dates and each chip's colour, mould and inlay.5
  • Ask a seller about the chip's origin and for photos of face, back and edge.
  • Expect more than one era. A Las Vegas chip from before 2006 and a riverboat chip from 1993-2000 will have different histories even with the same name.

A venue-first checklist for Lady Luck fifty-cent chips

Treat Lady Luck 50 cent as the start of the search rather than a complete identity. Copy any city, state or vessel wording from the chip, and compare that wording with the venue list above. When the city is absent, rely on a specific design match instead of choosing the best-known Lady Luck history.

For a rack-building request, include a photograph of the exact face and edge pattern you need. Ask whether the offered lot contains one design, mixed conditions or replacement labels. Matching a pleasant-looking fractional from another venue might solve a home-game problem, but it changes the collection you are building.

Is a Lady Luck chip a Downtown Grand chip?

The downtown property changed names, but the name on the physical chip remains part of its identity.1 A later brand does not substitute for the original issue in a Lady Luck display. Keep the old and new venue names in notes so future searches can follow the property history without merging the chip series.
